De exacte omstandigheden rondom zijn jeugd zijn weinig gedocumenteerd, maar het staat vast dat hij uitgebreid reisde door Europa, waaronder Londen, Duitsland, Frankrijk, Spanje en Italië. Deze ervaring gaf hem een brede kijk op kunst en cultuur, wat zich terugvond in zijn stijl.
