Advertisements in the Daily News by the Commercial Printing Company reveal that Holton was selling a wide range of foreign and domestic alcoholic beverages from his shop on Middle Street in New Bern in 1881. Just a few of the items he stocked included brandies, whiskies, gin, rum, ale, wine, and cider.
