The Artistic Journey of Robert S. Neuman

Born in Kellogg, United States, Robert S. Neuman was an American abstract painter, printmaker, and art teacher. His early passion for the arts began in his childhood in Idaho, where he would use drafting and painting materials from his parents' hardware store to capture the scenic Western vistas. After serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II, Neuman pursued his education at the California College of Arts and Crafts, where he earned both a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Applied Art and a Master of Fine Arts. His academic training was furthered at the California School of Fine Arts and Mills College, where he studied under James Budd Dixon and Max Beckmann.

Neuman's career was marked by significant international experiences, including a Fulbright Fellowship that took him to Stuttgart, Germany, and a Guggenheim Fellowship that led him to Barcelona, Spain. These travels deeply influenced his creative output, leading to the development of various distinct series of paintings. His work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions across the East Coast and abroad, and his pieces are held in various museum and private collections.

      Style and Symbolic Series

Neuman's approach to painting was characterized by a focus on symbols and a bold color palette. His work often utilized graphical, geometric forms and techniques such as stamping, taping, and the inclusion of pencil to define edges and planes of space. Over his sixty-year career, he developed sixteen different series, each exploring a specific motif or idea through a unique visual language.
