A life in black and white

Born in Toronto on April 21, 1901, Thoreau MacDonald moved through a world defined by sharp contrasts. Because of colour blindness, his hands worked primarily with the starkness of black and white. He began studying under his father, J.E.H. MacDonald, in 1921. This early training helped shape a self-taught approach that relied on observation rather than formal academic theory. By 1922, his linoleum cuts were appearing in the Canadian Forum.

His work often looked toward the Ontario farmland. He found interest in the way factories and construction sites sat within the landscape. While he shared a certain subject matter with his father, his eye turned toward the structural details of a changing environment. His lines were deliberate. He used parallel horizontal lines to build skies and simplified amoebic shapes for clouds. Trees in his drawings often took on the appearance of conch shell skeletons.

      The hand of an illustrator

MacDonald spent much of his career contributing to the printed word. He provided illustrations for approximately 150 journals, novels, and books of poetry. His role at the Canadian Forum expanded from contributor to art editor. This work required a specific kind of precision, where small drawings could end chapters or act as quiet embellishments on a page.

His technical habits remained consistent across different media:

      • Animals were often rendered in profile or facing directly forward, reminiscent of ancient Near Eastern art.
      • The sky was constructed through repetitive, horizontal markings.
      • Natural forms like clouds and trees were stripped down to their most basic, recognizable shapes.

A place in the Canadian group

In 1933, he became a founding member of the Canadian Group of Painters. This period saw him deeply involved in the visual culture of the 1920s and 1930s, particularly through his work for Ryerson Press. His output was not limited to paper; he also worked with silkscreen, as seen in pieces like The Snow Storm from the late 1940s.

He lived and worked in Toronto until his death on May 30, 1989. His legacy remains tied to the way he captured the textures of the Canadian landscape through a restricted palette, finding depth in the simple arrangement of line and shape.
