Born in New Delhi, India, her formative years were spent traversing the diverse landscapes of India, Thailand, and Austria, an upbringing that undoubtedly instilled in her a profound appreciation for varied textures, colors, and cultural narratives. This global perspective took a decisive turn in 1973 when she moved to Milan, a city that would become a cornerstone of her professional identity. Her formal artistic training began to take shape in 1979 upon her graduation from the Scuola Politecnica di Design, marking the beginning of a career dedicated to the intersection of form, light, and material.

In Milan, Hamel immersed herself in the vibrant pulse of contemporary design, working alongside luminaries such as Ugo La Pietra and Ambrogio Rossari. Her development was further enriched by a significant period of collaboration with the legendary Alessandro Mendini between 1981 and 1erb92. During these years, she became an active participant in the influential Alchimia movement, a time that allowed her to explore the boundaries of radical design and experimental aesthetics.
