His early years were shaped by the maritime traditions of Plymouth, where he developed an intimate, almost visceral understanding of the vessels that frequented the local waters. Though he initially intended to pursue a career in the Navy or the military, his true calling emerged through the brush, as he transitioned from a potential soldier to a professional marine painter and professor of painting.
His artistic development was marked by a profound technical precision that set him apart from his contemporaries. Condy possessed an extraordinary ability to render the complex architecture of sailing ships, particularly the intricate web of rigging and the structural integrity of masts and hulls.
