      Early Life, Family and Training

August Müller was born on 13 June 1836 in Rottweil, Germany. His early years were spent in Tübingen, where his family had relocated following his father's appointment as a judicial secretary. His father had previously practiced as a lawyer in Rottweil, and the family's social standing was tied to this legal profession. Despite the intellectual environment of a legal household, Müller's path was initially intended to follow a more terrestrial route. His parents envisioned a future for him in agriculture, a practical vocation that seemed more suited to their expectations than the life of a painter.

He attended the Realschule, receiving a formal education that preceded his emergence as a creative force. By 1858, Müller began to establish himself artistically in Rustige. His talent was difficult to suppress, and he eventually moved toward formal training. His technical skill was recognized early on when he won several prizes at the Stuttgarter Akademie. These accolades marked the beginning of a transition from the agricultural life his parents had planned toward the professional circles of the German art world.

      Life and Activity in Munich

In 1865, Müller moved to Munich, a transition that would define the trajectory of his career as a German genre painter. He became associated with the Munich School, finding himself within a circle of established artistic influence. His development was nurtured by the guidance of Jakob Grünenwald, Heinrich Schaumann, and the animal painter Anton Braith. This period of mentorship helped refine his ability to capture the nuances of everyday existence.

His output during these years focused largely on the rhythms of rural life. He possessed a particular talent for depicting cheerful motifs that resonated with the public, ensuring his works were well-received by collectors. The Munich Kunstverein recognized his skill by acquiring his painting Schreibunterricht. His ability to translate the simplicity of country living into engaging scenes allowed him to maintain a steady presence in the local art scene.

      Key Works and Artistic Output

Müller’s output was defined by a focus on genre scenes, often capturing the quietude or humor of rural existence. His early years in Munich saw him producing works that resonated with the tastes of the time, such as Der Landarzt (1867) and Der Kunstfreund (1868). He frequently explored the domestic sphere, sometimes through a lens of irony. This is evident in his 1869 compositions, Häusliches Glück, Häusliches Kreuz, and Das größte Kreuz, which presented a humorous contrast regarding domestic life. His ability to find narrative in the everyday was further demonstrated in Bittere Arznei (1870) and Mutterliebe (1871).

As his career progressed, his subject matter continued to dwell on the human condition and social interactions. In 1873, he painted Zu Hause, ein alter bäuerlicher Junggeselle auf Freiersfüßen, a work that captured a specific social archetype. Later works, such as In der Laube, Die genesende Mutter (1880), maintained this interest in intimate, domestic settings. His final completed works included Aus Tirol, Schwäbischer Fuhrmann, painted in 1885.

      Later Years and Death

The final years of August Müller were marked by a decline in both physical health and personal stability. He struggled against the effects of meningitis alongside other various illnesses that weakened him. These persistent medical challenges eventually led to his death by suicide on 19 May 1885 in Munich, Germany.

The passing of the painter left behind a significant and fragmented body of work. His estate consisted of 95 items, many of which were sketches, studies, or paintings that remained unfinished. The Kunstverein took charge of his remaining artistic output, exhibiting the collection of works to the public. Following this exhibition, the rest of his estate—which included a variety of studio objects and numerous costumes—was sold through an auction.
