The Life and Art of Édouard Brandon
Born in Paris, France, Jacques Émile Édouard Brandon was a painter who studied at the Beaux-Arts de Paris under Antoine-Alphonse Montfort, Françoise-Édouard Picot, and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. He maintained a close correspondence with Corot throughout his life. In 1856, Brandon moved to Rome, where he resided until 1863. During his time in Rome, he focused on decorating a room in the church of Santa Brigida on the Piazza Farnese, where St. Bridget of Sweden had lived. His works from this period, such as The Canonization of St. Bridget and The Last Mass of St. Bridget, were exhibited at the Parisian Salons during the 1860s, earning him medals in 1865 and 1867.
Following his return to Paris in 1863, Brandon's subject matter shifted toward Jewish themes, reflecting his Sephardic Jewish heritage. His later paintings frequently depicted rabbis and synagogues, including Scene in a Synagogue. He was invited by Edgar Degas to display five paintings in the 1874 exhibition known as the First Impressionist Exhibition. Brandon died in Paris in 1897.
