      The Painter of Leiden

Born in Leiden in 1728, Hendrik van Velthoven grew up in a city where art was a deeply ingrained part of daily life. His early years were shaped by the formal training he received at the Drawing Academy in Leiden, a place that provided the technical foundation for his later career. By 1745, he was already making his mark, appearing in the annals of Leiden University under the name Batavus Pictor, a title that identified him as a painter of the city. He lived on Hogewoerd street with his father during these formative years, moving through the world as a young man finding his footing in a competitive craft.

His professional ascent was steady and marked by the formal recognition of his peers. In 1753, he achieved the status of a master at the Guild of St Luke in Leiden. This was a significant milestone, granting him the right to take on students and establish a studio that would eventually attract the attention of the social elite. His skill as a draftsman, painter, and miniaturist allowed him to navigate different circles of society, from the academic halls of the university to the private homes of the wealthy.

A Life in Portraits and Instruction

Van Velthoven found much of his success in the intimate world of portraiture. He had a way of capturing the likenesses of those who sought his brush, including members of the aristocracy and prosperous merchants. His studio became a destination for those wanting to preserve their image for posterity. His work often involved creating pairs of portraits, such as the ones of Jan Bartholomeus de Malnoë and Catharina Gasparina van der Meulen, which remain in the Museum Lakenhal today.

Beyond the canvas, his life was defined by his role as a teacher. In 1761, he moved to Utrecht to take up a position as the first drawing master at the Fundatie van Renswoude. This role allowed him to shape the next generation of artists, including his pupil Louis François Gérard van der Puyl. His presence in Utrecht marked the final chapter of his active years, a period spent teaching the nuances of line and form until his death in 1770.

His technical range included several distinct methods of expression:

      • Oil paintings on canvas and panel for formal portraiture.
      • Watercolours used for interior scenes and specific likenesses.
      • Gouache used to depict classical and mythological scenes.
      • Red chalk drawings used for studies of figures like the philosopher Democritus.

      The Legacy of the Draftsman

While many of his contemporaries left behind vast collections of sketches, very few of Van Velthoven's drawings or works on paper have survived the passage of time. This scarcity makes the pieces that do remain particularly significant. His ability to move between the delicate detail of a miniature and the broader composition of a landscape shows a versatility that was highly valued in the mid-eighteenth century. Even in his later years in Utrecht, his reputation as a skilled hand remained intact.

The traces of his life are found in the collections of the University of Leiden and the Centraal Museum in Utrecht. These remnants, from academic portraits to mythological gouaches, offer a glimpse into the hand of a man who was deeply embedded in the artistic fabric of the Netherlands. He was a man of his time, a master of the guild, and a teacher who helped sustain the traditions of his craft through his instruction.
