      The Light of the South

Willem Anthonie Oepts began his life in Amsterdam, where his early years were shaped by the practicalities of technical drawing. After training as a machine draftsman, he spent his time working at the Amsterdam harbor. His path toward painting was not a formal one; he was a self-taught artist who found his way into the world of color through the encouragement of others. In the early 1920s, his focus was on graphic work, creating woodcuts and linocuts that captured the darker, more somber street scenes and cityscapes of his home city.

A profound shift occurred in 1937 when he traveled to the southern French fishing village of Collioure. The Mediterranean light changed his perspective entirely. The heavy, dark tones of his Dutch period gave way to a new way of seeing. He became a colorist, finding a sense of liberation in the way the sun hit the landscape. His palette transformed, embracing bright, often unrealistic shades of red, violet, bright yellow, green, and cobalt blue. He began to construct his landscapes using large, abstracted planes of color, moving away from strict realism toward something more essential.

      A Life Between Borders

The years of the Second World War brought significant upheaval to his life. While living in France, he served as a soldier during the 1944 invasion of France and was wounded in the conflict. During the war years, he also worked as a war artist in England for the Dutch government in London. These experiences of displacement and conflict were set against a backdrop of intense creative development. By 1939, he had settled in Paris with his wife, Marthe Caudal, a French woman who would be part of his life in France from then on.

In Paris, he sought to refine his understanding of color through lessons with Othon Friesz. This period helped him master the interplay of light and pigment. His work during this time often focused on:

      • Village squares and harbor scenes
      • Sun-drenched landscapes in southern France
      • The interaction of light and shadow in Mediterranean settings

      The Persistence of Color

As the decades progressed, Oepts maintained a secluded life, often working in the south of France and developing his sketches in his Paris studio. He lived through a period when abstraction was the dominant force in the Netherlands, a movement that often left figurative painters like him without much interest from the mainstream. He did not belong to a single, rigid movement, but his work remained deeply rooted in the traditions of Fauvism and Post-Impressionism. He used black not just as a shadow, but as a deliberate color within his compositions.

His recognition grew steadily, particularly from the 1960s onward, as collectors in both the Netherlands and France began to appreciate his unique approach to the landscape. His paintings, such as those depicting village greens or houses along yellow fields, remain focused on the way light and color define a space. He died in Paris, leaving behind a body of work that sought to capture the radiance of the world through bold, simplified planes of light.
