Born in Singapore on 11 November 1943, Ang Ah Tee has emerged as a veteran figure in the Singaporean art scene, a painter whose prolific output reflects a lifelong devotion to the canvas. His journey into the world of fine arts began with a childhood curiosity that led him to attend afternoon art classes alongside his formal education. This early passion eventually brought him to the prestigious Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied from 1960 to 1962. During these formative years, he was mentored by luminaries such as Georgette Chen and Cheong Soo Pieng, both of whom were pioneers of the celebrated Nanyang Style. This lineage of instruction deeply informed his technical foundation, grounding his later explorations in a rich tradition of regional aesthetics.

Before committing himself fully to the life of an artist, Ang Ah Tee balanced his creative pursuits with a career as a clerk at the Port Authority of Singapore. It was during this period that he began honing his craft in his spare time, working primarily with watercolours and oils. His dedication soon bore fruit when he won the Open Art Competition organized by the Port Authority of Singapore in 1974. Driven by an unyielding commitment to his vocation, he left his administrative role in 1977 to become a full-time artist, a transition supported by early patrons like Della Butcher.

The evolution of Ang Ah Tee’s style is marked by a deliberate shift in medium and a broadening of geographical horizons. While his early works utilized the delicate transparency of watercolour and the depth of oil, 1978 marked a significant turning point as he transitioned to using acrylics. His artistic process is often characterized by intensive thought and thorough research, as he frequently travels across Asia and the world to find inspiration. From the landscapes of Bali and Malacca to the historic landmarks of London, Egypt, and China, his travels have provided a vast reservoir of imagery for his compositions.

His oeuvre is remarkably vast, with more than 2,000 paintings created since 1976. This immense body of work spans various subjects, including:

In 2001, he was awarded first prize at the Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art Awards Competition, a testament to his enduring skill and relevance. However, perhaps his most profound recognition came in 2009, when he was honored with the Cultural Medallion, Singapore's highest honor for artists. This award recognized not just his technical mastery of acrylic, watercolour, and oil, but also his role as a vital contributor to the nation's cultural landscape.
