Opis umetničkog dela

Yanko’s work is influenced by Modernist geometric abstraction as well as the bright, saturated hues found in commercial sign painting and toy construction sets. Heavily focused on process, he describes, “I develop my paintings systematically through an additive process of layering acrylic paint mixed with acrylic mediums onto masked areas. I initially establish sets of vertical and horizontal bands, applied to either a square or rectangular format, which function as an armature on which subsequent color shapes are layered. As I paint, I allow shapes to shift in registration in order to reveal varying amounts of underlying color.”

Biografija umetnika

Paul Yanko: Ohio-Born Visual Artist Known for Evocative Portraits & Landscapes

Paul Yanko, born in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1968, is an American visual artist recognized for his distinctive approach to figurative and landscape painting. His work explores themes of perception, materiality, and the interplay between form and color, reflecting a deep engagement with both artistic tradition and contemporary concerns. Since 2004, Yanko has resided in Greenville, South Carolina, where he teaches in the Visual Arts Department at the Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, fostering creativity and critical thinking in young artists. He holds an MFA in Painting from Kent State University (1995) and a BFA in Illustration from Cleveland Institute of Art (1991), grounding his artistic practice in foundational skills and conceptual exploration. During his formative years in Ohio, Yanko exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions at institutions including the Cleveland Museum of Contemporary Art and McDonough Museum of Art, establishing himself as a respected figure within the regional art scene. His meticulous attention to detail—particularly in capturing subtle nuances of light and texture—became a hallmark of his style. In 2002, he received an Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Grant, providing crucial support for artistic experimentation and professional development. This grant enabled him to pursue ambitious projects that pushed the boundaries of his technique and conceptual vision. His work has garnered critical acclaim and is included in prominent collections across the United States, notably Greenville County Museum of Art, The Johnson Collection (Spartanburg, SC), Contemporary Carolina Collection at MUSC (Charleston, SC), and Akron Art Museum. These affiliations underscore Yanko’s contribution to the broader artistic landscape and ensure that his paintings continue to inspire audiences for years to come. Yanko's artistic journey began with a fascination for architectural forms and geometric patterns—influences that would later permeate his compositions. He cites the didactic materials of his childhood classroom as a formative experience, emphasizing the importance of visual stimulation in shaping artistic sensibility. Beyond these personal inspirations, Yanko draws upon broader artistic traditions, including stained glass and textile design, demonstrating an expansive intellectual curiosity. More recently, he has been captivated by Modulor, Le Corbusier’s proportional system—a conceptual framework that informs his ongoing exploration of balance and harmony within his paintings. His distinctive painting technique involves layering acrylic paint mixed with various mediums over collaged surfaces – a process that yields textured surfaces and allows for dynamic interplay between flat planes and sculptural relief. This method reflects Yanko's commitment to mastering traditional techniques while simultaneously embracing innovation and experimentation. He consistently seeks to refine his craft, resulting in artworks characterized by precision, subtlety, and profound emotional resonance.
