Born in Buffalo, New York, on February 9, 1867, Paul King grew up in an environment where the shaping of form was a daily reality. He spent his formative years assisting his father, Bernard H. King, a man skilled in the delicate craft of designing and working with precious metals. Through this proximity to his father's labor, the young boy began to grasp the fundamental principles of composition, color, and texture. This early exposure to the tactile nature of design provided a foundation for the technical precision that would later define his hand.
The impulse toward a life of visual expression became clear when he was sixteen, as he took up the art of lithography. This early apprenticeship allowed him to master the discipline of draftsmanship before he ever stepped into a formal academy. His talent led him to the Art Students League of Buffalo, where he began to refine his natural inclinations into a structured practice. He sought further instruction in the bustling atmosphere of New York, enrolling at the Art Students League of New York from 1901 until 1904. During these years, he studied under Harry Siddons Mowbray, absorbing the methods of a seasoned instructor.
His pursuit of mastery did not end with his time in New York. Paul King continued to expand his technical knowledge at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, seeking to bridge the gap between his early training in lithography and the broader possibilities of painting. These years of study, moving from the workshop of a craftsman to the halls of established academies, shaped him into a painter of great technical competence and observational depth.
In 1905, seeking to deepen his understanding of the craft, King departed for Holland. He spent two years immersed in the study of art under the guidance of Willy Sluiter, Evert Pieters, and Bernard Blommers. This period of European study provided him with a foundation that would inform his later approach to light and form. Upon returning to America, he chose to settle in Philadelphia, a city that would become a central hub for his professional life and civic engagement.
His presence in Philadelphia was marked by a commitment to the development of others. Between 1908 and 1921, he served on the board of the Philadelphia School of Design for Women. His leadership within the institution grew during the middle of that decade; he held the position of acting President from 1915 until 1918. While he navigated these administrative responsibilities, his own hand remained busy with the work of a painter and illustrator, maintaining a steady presence in the artistic circles of the city.
The precision required by his early years as a lithographer and illustrator for publications such as Life and Harper’s magazines deeply informed his approach to the canvas. He possessed a keen eye for the subtle nuances of everyday life, translating the quiet rhythms of the world into visual form. His brush often sought out the character of portraits, the sprawling reach of rural landscapes, and the specific light found in coastal views and harbor scenes. There was a certain vigor in his compositions, balancing a sturdy realism with a sensitive understanding of how light and atmosphere interact within a scene.
This technical proficiency and his ability to capture the essence of a place earned him significant recognition within the American art community. His talent was acknowledged through various honors, including prizes from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Salmagundi Club, and the Philadelphia Art Club. He also received accolades from the National Academy of Design and at the Panama Pacific Exposition of 1915. These successes reflected a career built on a foundation of disciplined draftsmanship and a sincere appreciation for the natural world.
His standing in the professional sphere reached a formal peak in 1933, when he was named an academician of the National Academy of Design. This distinction solidified his place among the established painters of his era. His works were frequently exhibited at major institutions, including the Corcoran Gallery and the Boston Art Club, ensuring his vision reached a wide audience of collectors and admirers.
The years following the Great War saw King's life take a turn toward both civic duty and a change in scenery. During the First World War, he applied his keen understanding of form and color to a practical and urgent cause, working on camouflage for the United States Navy. This period of service coincided with a transition in his personal life, as he eventually moved away from the bustling art circles of Philadelphia. In the early 1920s, he settled in Stony Brook, Long Island, a move that allowed him to find fresh inspiration in the landscapes of the Northeast.
Even as he established himself in this new setting, his presence in the professional art world remained steady. He continued to be an active exhibitor, presenting his work at esteemed institutions such as the National Academy of Design and the Corcoran Gallery. His commitment to his craft persisted through these later decades, maintaining his connection to the established galleries of the era. He remained in the coastal reaches of Long Island until his death on November 25, 1947, in Stony Brook.
