Initially drawn to the visual storytelling of cinema, Wade spent four formative years crafting commercials, television dramas, and documentaries, honing his eye for composition and capturing fleeting moments of atmosphere. This early experience proved invaluable, informing his later approach to painting – an intuitive blend of observation and emotional expression.
His return to painting in the 1970s coincided with a move to Northern Ireland, a region that would profoundly shape his artistic vision. The rugged beauty of Donegal, the dramatic coastline, and the evocative light of the Irish countryside became recurring subjects, imbued with a sense of both serenity and melancholy. Wade’s work quickly gained recognition within the Royal Ulster Academy (RUA), a prestigious institution celebrating Northern Irish art, solidifying his place as a significant voice in contemporary landscape painting. He was elected an Academician in 2003, a testament to his enduring contribution to the region's artistic heritage.
Wade’s paintings are immediately recognizable for their vibrant, impressionistic style. He eschewed rigid realism, instead prioritizing the conveyance of mood and atmosphere through a dynamic use of color and brushwork. Thick impasto – layers of paint applied with visible texture – dominates many of his landscapes, creating a palpable sense of depth and movement.
