安井曾太郎は京都出身。1903年京都市立商業学校を中退。翌年浅井忠主宰の聖護院洋画研究所に入る。1907年に渡仏し、アカデミー・ジュリアンに入学してデッサン力を磨くかたわら、ミレー、ピサロ、セザンヌらの画法を研究する。帰国した翌年の1915年、二科展に滞欧作44点を特別陳列し話題を呼んだ。その後、日本の風土に合った油絵を求め続け、やがて大胆な構図、伸びやかな筆致、鮮やかな色彩のコントラスト、簡素で落ち着いた独自の画風を開拓した。また、実物に勝る芸術を生み出すためには、感動によってデフォルメされた形態や、強調された色彩や明暗が必要なことも示した。1935年帝国美術院会員となり、二科会会員を辞し、翌年一水会の創立に参加。1944年に帝室技芸員となり、東京美術学校教授に就任。1949年に日本美術家連盟初代会長に就任し、1952年に文化勲章を受賞。

For seven years (until 1914), he immersed himself in the European art scene. He was profoundly influenced by Realist masters like Jean-François Millet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, but it was Paul Cézanne’s emphasis on form and structure that left a lasting impression, shaping his unique artistic vision.

Artistic Style and Development

Returning to Japan in 1915 with the outbreak of World War I, Yasui Sōtarō began to forge his distinctive style – often referred to as the “Yasui style.” This approach masterfully blended Western painting techniques with Japanese aesthetic sensibilities. His work is characterized by bold deformations, deliberate omissions, and a striking use of color. He sought to move beyond mere imitation of Western styles, aiming for an authentically modern Japanese expression. A period of health challenges followed his return, but he persevered in refining his unique approach.
