      A life shaped by movement

Avraham Ofek arrived in Israel in 1949, part of a large wave of Jewish families leaving Bulgaria. He was born in Burgas, but his early years were marked by the quiet shifts of an adoptive family moving through Varna and eventually settling in Kibbutz Ein HaMifratz. The world he knew changed quickly; his birth parents had died before he could grow up with them, and his adoption was a fact that remained hidden from him until his twenties. He grew up amidst the agricultural rhythms of the kibbutz, where his interest in painting began to take shape under the informal guidance of a neighbor, Aryeh Rothman.

His path took him far beyond the borders of the kibbutz. In 1958, he traveled to Italy to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. There, he learned the technical demands of fresco and mural painting, a medium that would later define much of his public work. His studies were not confined to one place; he spent time in Spain and London, absorbing different approaches to form and light. These years of travel and formal training provided the tools for a career that would eventually span sculpture, printmaking, and large-scale wall paintings.

      The changing landscape

The way Ofek looked at the land shifted as he aged. His early works often focused on traditional landscapes, using gouache and tempera on paper to capture the textures of the Middle East. These pieces frequently featured concrete, grounded images: cows, agricultural machinery, and the rugged scenery of the countryside. He used dark colorations that moved away from simple attempts to reflect light, opting instead for a heavier, more physical presence. During his time in Haifa, Acre, and Jaffa, he also turned his attention to the lives of Arab workers and the reality of urban slums.

As time passed, the clarity of these landscapes began to recede. The sharp edges of the early years gave way to undefined spaces where the background became more prominent than the subject. Toward the end of his life, Jerusalem became a central motif in his work. These later pieces often carried a sense of solitude and loss, reflecting a deep connection to the city. His work during this period was not interested in the abstraction or conceptual trends that were moving through Israeli art; he remained committed to figurative painting and the use of symbolism.

      Public marks and shared symbols

Ofek left his mark on many public spaces through large-scale murals. These works were often integrated into the architecture of the institutions he served or lived near. Some notable examples include:

      • A mural at Beit Haam in Kfar Uria from 1970.
      • The mural in the Central Post Office in Jerusalem, completed in 1972.
      • The mural 'Return to Zion' at the Tel Aviv University Library in 1976.
      • The large-scale work 'Israel, A Shattered Dream' at Haifa University, created between 1986 and 1987.

In 1976, he became a member of the Leviathan Group alongside Shmuel Ackerman and Mikhail Grobman. This group sought to combine metaphysics and Judaism with environmental art. Through this collective, Ofek explored performances and symbolic activities rooted in Jewish tradition. His ability to work across mediums—from stone sculptures like 'The Binding of Isaac' to delicate etchings and lithographs—allowed him to maintain a presence in both the academic halls of Bezalel Academy and the public squares of Israel.
