A Life in the Bruges School
Bruno De Simpel was born in Waasten on 26 June 1832. He belonged to a family of landowners and officials, a background that meant painting was never his primary occupation or a means to earn a living. He moved through the social circles of his time, eventually marrying Marie-Joséphine Le François in 1885. His life was rooted in the quiet stability of his class, yet his eyes were often turned toward the specific light and architecture of the cities he inhabited.
He was a part of the Brugse School, a group of painters who looked closely at the character of Bruges. His work often focused on the skyline and the way the city appeared from different vantage points. He did not paint for the market, but rather captured the stillness of the landscape as he saw it.
The Quiet Observer of Bruges
His brushwork was used to document the physical reality of the Flemish landscape. He focused on the way light settled on the buildings and the water, often working in oil on canvas. His subjects were specific and grounded in the geography of his surroundings.
Some of the scenes he captured include:
- A view of the Bruges skyline.
- The Minnewaterbrug, showing the city as it appeared in 1562.
- A panorama of the city from the Begijnenvest.
Legacy and Presence
De Simpel died in Brugge on 7 December 1902. While he did not pursue art as a profession, his paintings remain as records of a specific time and place. His works are held in collections such as the Groeningemuseum in Brugge, where his vision of the city survives in oil and pigment.
