A Life of Observation
Carl Arriens lived a life shaped by the movement of people and the shifting landscapes of distant lands. Born in Heide, Holstein, in 1869, he was a man whose eyes were often turned toward the horizon. While many of his contemporaries remained settled in the studios of Europe, Arriens found himself part of something much larger. He was an illustrator, painter, and writer who sought to document the world through both the brush and the pen.
His time in Berlin brought him into contact with various intellectual circles, including the Berliner Anthropologische Gesellschaft. This connection eventually led him away from the familiar streets of Germany and toward the heart of Africa. Between 1910 and 1914, he participated in the German Inner-Africa Research Expeditions led by Leo Frobenius. These years were not merely about scientific study; they were years of direct encounter with new cultures and environments.
The Art of the Expedition
During his travels through Africa, Arriens worked as a draftsperson and painter, capturing scenes that would otherwise remain unseen by those in Europe. His work often focused on the daily rhythms of life in regions such as Nigeria and the Benue River area. He used various techniques, including watercolor, drawing, and printmaking, to record his observations. Some of his notable subjects included:
- The bustling activity within the Bida market, specifically focusing on bead-cutters and bronze-chasers.
- Portraits of individuals, such as a Nupe woman and the daughter of the Emir of Bida.
- Scenes of architecture and social life, including the night markets and village settings.
- The tension of conflict, such as the English attack on Longido Mountain in 1914.
His watercolors, like those depicting Nupe youths or the architecture of Nigeria, possess a quiet, observational quality. He did not merely paint landscapes; he painted people in their natural settings. His illustrations for books also allowed him to share these distant worlds with a wider audience, often accompanying travel writings and literature.
A Legacy of Documentation
As his career progressed, Arriens transitioned into the role of a travel writer. Books such as Mosaik des Völkerlebens, Unter Kabylen und Beduinen, and Am Herdfeuer der Schwarzen were published in the years following his expeditions. These writings, much like his paintings, were attempts to bring the details of foreign lives back to a German readership. He remained active in the literary and artistic world of Berlin until his death around 1930.
The significance of his work lies in its role as a visual record. Through his sketches and paintings, we see a specific moment in history—a period of intense colonial exploration and ethnographic study. His ability to move between the roles of illustrator, painter, and author allowed him to create a multi-layered account of the places he visited, leaving behind a collection of images that capture the faces and customs of a bygone era.
