A Life of Maritime Mastery
Born in Albany, United States, Charles Temple Dix was the younger son of General John Adams Dix. His early life was marked by travel, including stays in Italy between 1853 and 1855. Although he briefly attended Union College in Schenectady, New York, he ultimately abandoned his academic studies to pursue a career in art. By the 1850s, he had established himself in New York City, working from a studio in the Tenth Street Studio Building and exhibiting at the National Academy of Design starting in 1857.
Dix's artistic pursuits were interrupted by the American Civil War, during which he served as a first lieutenant in the Fourteenth Infantry Regiment, acting as an aide-de-camp to his father. Following the conflict, he returned to his craft and moved to Europe, eventually settling in Rome. He became part of the American artist community in Italy and married Camilla Ottilie Watson. His work, which specialized in marine landscapes, was exhibited in various locations including Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington (D.C.).
Legacy and Final Years
The career of Charles Temple Dix was cut short when he died suddenly in Rome due to a pulmonary hemorrhage. His technical skill in the genre of marine landscapes earned him recognition in both America and Europe. One of his notable works from 1860 is The Flying Dutchman.
