A Life Formed in Clay and Oil

Arthur Edward Cleeve Horne arrived in Canada from Jamaica as a young child, part of a family that moved to the country in 1913. His early relationship with form began not with a brush, but with modeling clay provided by his mother during a difficult recovery from pneumonia. This childhood impulse toward creation manifested early; a small clay head of Shakespeare earned him recognition at the Canadian National Exhibition when he was only nine. By fifteen, he was already exhibiting his work with the Royal Canadian Academy.

His formal training followed a path of shifting disciplines. In 1927, he sought the guidance of the British sculptor Dorothy Dick, and later studied under Emanuel Hahn at the Ontario College of Art and Design. While Hahn once suggested that a sculptor could never truly transition into a painter, Horne proved otherwise. He moved from the tactile world of bronze busts and bas-relief to the nuanced demands of oil painting, studying portraiture and landscape under John Wentworth Russell between 1934 and 1935.

      The Portraitist of a Nation

Horne became a fixture in Canadian society, a painter whose work captured the likenesses of those shaping the country's history. His career was defined by an immense output, with over 400 portraits completed between 1928 and 1991. He possessed a particular skill for capturing prominent figures, including:

Beyond the canvas, his hands worked in more permanent mediums. He executed commissions such as the war memorial for the Law Society Upper Canada in Toronto and a bas-relief for the Bank of Canada Building. His ability to navigate both the delicate skin tones of an oil portrait and the heavy permanence of bronze allowed him to move through various professional circles, serving as an arts consultant and even as a camouflage officer with the rank of Captain during the Second World Hall.

      Recognition and Final Years

The honors bestowed upon Horne reflected his standing within the Canadian art establishment. He held leadership roles, including serving as President of the Ontario Society of Artists from 1949 to 1951. His contributions were noted by numerous institutions through awards such as the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts Medal and the Lieutenant Governor's Medal for Painting. In his later years, he was named an Officer of the Order of Canada and received the Order of Ontario.

He lived much of his life in Toronto, where he resided at Balmoral Avenue. Alongside his wife, Jean Mildred Harris, a fellow sculpture student, he maintained a presence in the city's cultural landscape until his death in 1998. His works remain held in significant collections, including the National Gallery of Canada and the Supreme Court of Canada, preserving the faces of the twentieth century through his specific, practiced lens.
