A Life in Ceramics and Color
Daniel Harkink was a Dutch painter, draftsperson, and pottery painter. Born in Gouda, Netherlands, his professional journey began with work as a draftsperson and pottery painter for several factories. After studying at the Hague Academy and the Polytechnic School in Delft, he refined his craft at De Porceleyne Fles. His career included a significant period at the Rozenburg pottery factory in The Hague, where he served as a painter-chemist. Following an artistic conflict in 1900, he moved to Gouda to work for the Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland, also known as Plazuid. There, he served as an artistic leader and laboratory chef, where he experimented with techniques and became the spiritual father of successful matte glaze pottery.
His mastery of tile tableaux earned him high praise, with the magazine De Lelie describing him in 1910 as the finest tile tableau painter in Holland. His notable ceramic works include:
Later Years and Artistic Evolution
After retiring from the pottery industry, Harkink moved to The Hague in 1928. In his later years, he turned his focus toward painting, specifically landscapes. His artistic presence grew through various exhibitions, including a debut on an exhibition ship in 1941 and a retrospective at Panorama Mesdag in 1942. Art critic Piet Begeer noted his ability to blend various techniques, including oil paint, to achieve a romantic beauty characterized by the sublime and the vastness of nature. He passed away in The Hague at the age of 91.
