Dominicus Anthonius Peduzzi was born in Amsterdam on November 2, 1817. Though he spent his life in the Netherlands, his heritage was Italian, a detail that traced back through his family roots. His early years in the Dutch capital provided the foundation for a life spent working with both paint and the lithographic stone.
His formal training began when he was quite young. From 1828 to 1831, he studied at the Koninklijke Akademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. During these formative years, he learned under the guidance of Johan Willem Pieneman. This period of study helped shape his technical skills before he transitioned into a professional career as a painter and lithographer.
Family connections also played a part in his social and professional circle. He was the brother-in-law of Elias Pieter van Bommel. These ties linked him to other figures within the artistic community of the time.
Life and Activity in Amsterdam
Peduzzi spent much of his professional life within the streets of Amsterdam, establishing himself as a steady presence in the local art scene. He became a member of the Koninklijke Akademie van Beeldende Kunsten, a recognition that marked his standing among his peers in the city. His work during these years was varied, reflecting a curiosity for both the quiet moments of domestic life and the movement of animals. He often turned his attention to interiors lit by the soft, flickering glow of candlelight, capturing how light settles in a room. He also found interest in genre scenes and the strength of equestrian pieces, often depicting horses and their riders.
Beyond his paintings, he was a skilled lithographer, using the medium to expand his reach and variety of expression. His professional ties to the city remained strong for decades, as he was employed in Amsterdam until 1858. During this long period of activity, his hand was seen in many different forms, from the detailed textures of a print to the subtle shadows of a painted room. He remained a fixture of the Dutch art community for many years before eventually moving toward the end of his life in Vienna.
