      Early Life, Family and Training

Elizabeth Strong was born on February 1, 1855, in Westport, Connecticut. She grew up as the daughter of Reverend Joseph Dwight Strong and Margaret Dewing Bixby Strong. Her early years were shaped by the steady influence of her family, though her path would eventually lead her far from her birthplace toward the West Coast.

Her formal training began in earnest at the California School of Design, which is known today as the San Francisco Art Institute. It was here that she began to refine her technical skills and develop the precision that would define her later work. Her talent was recognized early by her instructors through several honors. In 1875, she was awarded the Alvord Diploma for Drawing, and she followed this achievement the next year by receiving the Alvord Gold Medal for Drawing in 1876.

These early successes provided a foundation for a life spent observing the natural world. Elizabeth Strong possessed a focused discipline, moving from the structured lessons of her school toward a deeper understanding of the subjects she would eventually paint. Her education was not merely a matter of classroom study, but a steady accumulation of skill that prepared her for the professional life that awaited her in both California and abroad.

Artistic Activity in California and Europe

After her studies, Strong moved to Monterey, California, in 1878. This period marked a significant shift in her professional life, as she began to find her footing through commissions for dog portraits. She eventually moved to San Francisco, where she shared an art studio with Nellie Hopps. Their workspace was located in the Old Municipal Court building, also known as the Genella Building, a space that housed many other artists of the time.

Around 1881, she left the West Coast to travel to Europe. She remained abroad for nearly ten years, a period that allowed her to study under various masters. Her presence in the European art scene was marked by her inclusion in the Paris Salon, where she showed her first work in 1883. During her time in France, she also ran her own school and focused heavily on the study of animals.

Upon returning to the United States, her travels took her through Boston, Philadelphia, and New York. In the summer of 1894, she sought further instruction at the Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art, studying under William Merritt Chase. By 1896, she had returned to California, living between San Francisco and the East Bay.

      Key Works and Artistic Recognition

Strong earned the nickname "the Rosa Bonheur of America" due to her skill in capturing the essence of animals. Her ability to render livestock and pets with such precision and life earned her significant attention. In 1909, she was awarded a silver medal at the Alaska–Yukon–Pacific Exposition for her painting of cattle grazing in the Cragmont Hills in North Berkeley. This recognition highlighted her talent for combining animal portraiture with the natural landscape.

Her portfolio contains several notable pieces that reflect her focus on both domestic animals and the coastal atmosphere. Among these are English Setter with Terrier, which dates to about 1885, and Precious Moments, painted about 1887. She also captured the shifting light of the coast in Fog Lifting on the Coast. These works demonstrate her lifelong interest in the textures of fur and the changing moods of the California scenery.

Where to See the Works Today

Finding the traces of Elizabeth Strong's life work requires a bit of travel, as her paintings have found homes in several significant collections across the United States. For those interested in her depictions of animals and landscapes, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts holds pieces that reflect her skill. Her presence in the art world is also felt in the West, where the Crocker Art Museum maintains works from her career.

Much of her legacy remains tied to the California coast, where she spent so many of her years. The Monterey Museum of Art and the Monterey Peninsula Museum both house her paintings, preserving the way she captured the light and life of the region. These collections allow us to see the steady hand of an artist who found so much meaning in the natural world around her.
