A Life Between Two Shores
Born in Onchan, Isle of Man, in 1870, Elizabeth Styring Nutt lived a life defined by the movement between the industrial heart of England and the rugged coasts of Nova Scotia. Her early years took her from the Isle of Man to Sheffield following her father's death, where she began her formal training at the Sheffield School of Art. This foundation was later expanded through studies at the Newlyn School of Art and the Sorbonne. By 1914, she had earned a Master of Arts from the University of Sheffield, marking the beginning of a dual career as both an educator and a painter.
Her professional path took a significant turn in 1919 when she accepted the position of Principal at the Victoria School of Art and Design. She would hold this leadership role for twenty-four years, eventually renaming the institution the Nova Scotia College of Art in 1925. While her tenure was marked by a commitment to the school's growth, it was also characterized by a certain rigidity. Her conservative instructional methods occasionally drew friction from students and faculty alike, yet she remained an immovable force in the Halifax art community.
The Language of the Landscape
In her studio, Nutt practiced a style rooted in British academic traditions. She utilized the "square-brush" technique, a method favored by previous generations of British painters, to render the natural world. While she was influenced by Impressionism, her work did not seek to break from the past through radical innovation. Instead, she focused on an ordered and harmonious reproduction of the scenes before her. Her landscapes often captured the changing seasons of the North West Arm in Halifax, with specific works dedicated to Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter.
Her approach to subject matter was deeply tied to her belief in naturalism. She viewed the landscape as a medium for capturing the essential beauty of the environment, often looking toward England as a source of artistic inspiration. Her paintings, such as The Northwest Arm, Halifax (1926), possess a quiet realism that allows the rocky coastlines and conifer-filled backdrops to remain recognizable even decades after the paint had dried.
A Legacy of Organization
Beyond the canvas, Nutt was a tireless architect of the Canadian art scene. She did not merely participate in exhibitions; she built the structures that allowed others to exhibit. Her organizational efforts included:
- Founding the Maritime Art Association
- Establishing the Nova Scotia Society of Artists
- Serving as the first president of the Nova Scotia Society of Watercolour Painters
Her influence extended into literature as well, as she authored several books on drawing and art education, including Flower Drawing with the Children and The World of Appearance. These writings reflected her lifelong dedication to the pedagogy of art.
After retiring from her position at the college in 1943, Nutt returned to the United Kingdom. She passed away in Sheffield in 1946. Though her methods were often viewed as traditional, her work remains held in significant collections, including the National Gallery of Canada and Museums Sheffield, ensuring that her contribution to the development of the Nova Scotian art landscape is documented.
