Following a career as a secondary school teacher, he dedicated himself entirely to painting in 1962. His life was marked by a move to the Waldviertel region, where he lived in seclusion and drew inspiration from the natural world. His work evolved through several distinct phases, including his "Green Paintings," "Sand Pit" series, and his "Dance Pictures," which captured the movement of dancers in various settings, from his studio to the Vienna State Opera.
Grabmayr was known for his highly physical and experimental approach to medium and material. He developed a "mobile workshop" where he would be transported by tractor around his subjects, applying up to 100 kg of paint with a spatula. His technique often involved thick, impasto layers, sometimes incorporating natural elements such as grain stalks, sand, or ash directly into the pigment. His later works, often referred to as "Dance Leaves," utilized thinner inks and watercolors on lighter supports, while his "Stone Quarry" paintings focused on modulating white with minimal color and charcoal lines.
