Early Life, Family and Training
Born in 1881 in Lebanon, New Hampshire, Frederick Andrew Bosley showed an early inclination toward the visual arts that would define his life's work. In 1900, he entered the Museum School, where his talent began to flourish under the guidance of esteemed teachers Frank Benson and Edmund Tarbell. These mentors helped shape his technical foundation, guiding him through the rigorous discipline of his studies. His promise was recognized early when he won the Sears Prize in 1904, a distinction that marked him as a rising talent in his field.
The momentum of his early career continued when he was awarded the prestigious Paige Traveling Fellowship in 1907. This opportunity allowed him to travel and expand his horizons, a period of growth that would inevitably influence his perspective. During these formative years, he also found companionship in Emily Sohier, whom he eventually married. Together, they began a life that would see the arrival of their children, Edward, Elizabeth, and Ermingarde.
Residences and Teaching Career
After his studies and travels, Bosley sought a life that balanced the quietude of domesticity with the demands of his craft. In 1909, he and his wife, Emily Sohier, moved to a rented home in Lincoln known as Cherry Croft. This residence offered the couple a respite from the constant commotion of city life, providing a stable environment for their growing family, which included Edward, Elizabeth, and Ermingarde. Though the family found peace in the countryside, the pull of the urban art scene remained strong. He maintained a dedicated studio in Boston, situated within the famed Fenway Studio building, where he could focus on his painting away from the domestic sphere.
His expertise as a painter led him into the halls of academia, where he shared his knowledge with the next generation. He held teaching positions at the Abbott Academy in Andover and later at the Groton School. Through these roles, he influenced many students, imparting the technical skills he had mastered during his own rigorous training. His life was a balance of these two worlds: the tranquil, leafy surroundings of his home in Lincoln and the professional, industrious atmosphere of his Boston studio and the various schools where he taught.
Notable Works and Collections
The artist’s hand found expression in many forms, often capturing the quiet essence of his subjects through oil on canvas. In 1931, he completed a portrait of Lilla Cabot Perry, a work that remains part of a notable collection. His ability to render the human presence is further seen in his Portrait of a man, a piece that reflects his technical command of the medium. These works reveal a painter deeply concerned with the character of the individual, seeking to fix a likeness that speaks of a specific moment in time.
His compositions often touched upon the intimate details of life and the people who inhabited it. He produced a painting titled Emily, a work that carries a certain personal weight. Similarly, his 1919 work, The letter, shows a focus on narrative and the subtle tensions found in everyday scenes. Through these various subjects, he moved between the formal requirements of portraiture and the more quiet, observational qualities of genre painting, leaving behind a body of work that captures the spirit of his era.
