Early Life, Family and Training
Frederick Thomas Lines was born on 26 July 1808. He grew up as the youngest son of Samuel Lines, a man who had been active in the arts since 1778. Within the family, Frederick was a brother to Samuel Rostill Lines and Henry Harris Lines. His early years were shaped by the steady hand of his father, who provided his first lessons and tutored him in the fundamentals of drawing.
As his training progressed, Frederick Thomas Lines moved toward London to refine his skills. He sought out the guidance of Richard Evans, an artist who had worked as an assistant in the studio of Sir Thomas Lawrence. Under Evans, he focused his efforts on the specific discipline of portraiture. This period of study helped transition him from a student of his father's academy to a trained portraitist.
Professional Career and Exhibitions
Lines spent much of his working life navigating the spaces between teaching and formal exhibition. He spent time in Tottenham, where he taught drawing at Edwin Hill's Bruce Castle School. Later, he moved back to Birmingham to assist his father with the academy of arts. This period of his life was marked by a steady presence in the local art scene, working alongside his family to maintain the academy's place in the city.
His work found its way into several significant venues. He was a frequent contributor to the Royal Society of Arts and presented his pieces at the Royal Academy in London. In 1837, he joined the Birmingham Society of Arts, an organization that would later become known as the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. His involvement with these institutions shows a life spent within the established circles of English art, moving between the instructional duties of a teacher and the public life of an exhibitor.
Technique and Artistic Style
Lines worked primarily as a portrait painter, focusing his attention on the likenesses of his subjects. He moved between these formal commissions and more personal experiments, often turning his gaze toward the natural world. His studies from nature and his landscape works show a steady interest in the textures of the outdoors. He spent time observing the shifts in light and the specific details of the terrain.
He was a master of the medium of watercolour. His skill with the brush allowed him to capture subtle nuances in his subjects and the environment. This preference for watercolour suggests a preference for the fluid, transparent qualities of the pigment. He used the medium to navigate both the structured requirements of portraiture and the more spontaneous observations found in his landscape studies.
Personal Life and Later Years
Lines lived in Handsworth, which was then part of Staffordshire. He was married to Sarah Breedon Butler, and together they raised two children, Frances Elizabeth and Frederick Joseph Butler Lines. The family's life was centered around this domestic setting, where the practice of art was a shared language. His son, Frederick Joseph Butler Lines, inherited his father's inclination toward the arts, showing a similar talent for drawing and painting.
The later years of his life remained tied to the traditions of his family and the local artistic community. He passed away on 10 April 1898.
