      Early Life, Family and Training

Isobel Lilian Gloag was born in London in 1865. Her parents were from Perthshire, Scotland, though she grew up in the English capital. Her path toward painting began with early studies at St. John's Wood Art School. This initial training was followed by time spent at the Slade School of Fine Art, where she worked to refine her technical skills.

Health issues often interrupted her ability to pursue a regular course of study. Because of these physical challenges, she sought private instruction in the studio of M.W. Ridley. She also attended life classes in South Kensington to study the human form. These varied settings provided a foundation for her later work in oils and watercolours.

Her training eventually took her to Paris. There, she studied under Raphael Collin, absorbing the methods taught in the French capital before returning to London. After these years of study, she established a studio in Notting Hill, a space where she would continue to develop her approach to portraiture and design.

      Professional Career and Artistic Style

Her hands moved between the heavy texture of oils and the fluid transparency of watercolours. She was a painter of portraits, often capturing the quiet presence of her subjects, but her vision extended into the graphic clarity of posters and the structured light of stained-glass designs. Her professional standing was marked by her election to the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and her membership in the New Society of Painters in Water-Colours.

The direction of her work shifted as the years passed. Her early paintings drew heavily from the Pre-Raphaelite tradition, focusing on detailed, romanticized imagery. As her career progressed, her style moved toward a more modern sensibility. This evolution saw her work cited as an example of post-Victorian Aestheticism, often carrying the weight of Symbolist themes. She sought to capture more than just a likeness, using her brush to explore moods and symbolic meanings through her compositions.

      Exhibitions and Notable Works

Her presence in the exhibition halls of the Royal Academy began in 1893. That first showing featured a work titled A Raw Recruit. Over the course of her career, she brought a total of 19 works to the Royal Academy of Arts. Even after her death, her paintings found their way back into the public eye through a posthumous exhibition held at the Grafton Galleries in London.

Her output moved between the intimate and the decorative. She spent time working on flower paintings and produced various designs for the stained-glass artist Mary Lowndes. These designs required a different kind of precision than her oil and watercolour portraits. Her hands were as busy with the lines of a poster as they were with the textures of a canvas.
