The Alchemy of Smoke and Clay

Born in the Netherlands on February 18, 1953, Jos Vulto lived a life defined by the physical transformation of matter. While many artists seek to impose form upon a medium, Vulto often sought to let the environment dictate the final result. Her practice was deeply rooted in the tactile and the elemental, moving between the controlled precision of ceramics and the unpredictable nature of atmospheric intervention. She spent much of her working life in a studio in Soest, later finding a residence in La Borne, France, a place synonymous with the raw, elemental traditions of ceramic art.

Her approach to materiality was often unconventional, borrowing techniques from industrial or domestic processes to achieve unexpected textures. She was known for a method of "smoking" or "rooking" buildings, a process typically reserved for food production. This involved sealing the orifices of a site with cloth and burning sawdust within the interior. The resulting smoke would permeate the structure, leaving behind a physical record of the event through gradations in darkness and depth. This labor-intensive method turned architecture into a vessel for temporal change, capturing a moment of combustion and decay.

      Materiality and Process

The work of Vulto was characterized by a preoccupation with how surfaces react to heat, soot, and time. Her output was not merely about the object itself, but about the chemical and physical reactions that occurred during its creation. This interest in the transformative power of fire and smoke is evident in her diverse body of work:

      • Ceramic vessels, such as the pot with a lid held in the Centraal Museum Utrecht.
      • Smoke-imprinted shrouds that documented her large-scale architectural interventions.
      • Works on paper that captured the ephemeral traces of her "rooking" process.

In 1988, she produced INTRA I, Rookwade uit Rooking Intra (1:ý), a piece that exemplifies her interest in the intersection of site and substance. These works were not static; they were the residue of an action, a physical manifestation of the air and smoke that had occupied a space.

      A Quiet Presence

Vulto’s career was marked by a certain privacy. Despite the intensity of her physical processes, much of her personal life remained shielded from the public eye. She was the partner of Thom Verheul, and her presence in the ceramic community was felt through the weight and texture of her objects rather than through a loud or constant public persona. Her work was recognized in exhibitions such as the 1999 retrospective titled Smoking Buildings, which examined the traces left by her interventions.

She passed away on October 19, 2001. The legacy of her practice remains in the collections of institutions like the Centraal Museum Utrecht, where her ceramic works continue to hold the marks of the fire and the smoke that defined her life's work.
