      Early Life, Family and Training

Juan Lepiani was born on September 20, 1864, in Lima, Peru. He was the son of Melchor Botaro Lepiani Loyola and Manuela Toledo. Before finding his way into the studio, his hands were occupied with more practical matters. He spent time working as a paymaster for the central railroad line, a job far removed from the canvases he would later produce. This period of his life preceded his commitment to the brush, as he felt a natural pull toward art that eventually led him away from the railway.

His formal training began in Lima, where he sought out the guidance of established painters. He studied under Ramón Muñiz and Francisco Masías, learning the technical foundations of his craft. These early years of instruction shaped the way he would eventually approach the historical scenes that would define his career. By the time he married María Josefina Grossberger in 1891, his path as a painter was already taking shape. The couple would go on to have five children together.

      Artistic Career in Europe

In 1892, he left Peru for his first trip to Europe. He eventually made Rome his home. While living there, he often signed his canvases as J. Leppiani. His days were spent in the presence of the Old Masters. He spent much of his time copying the works of Raphael and Titian. These reproductions were highly regarded, and some of the best pieces were sent back to Peru. He sold many of these copies to American tourists passing through the city.

The work of copying required a steady hand and a keen eye for detail. He often worked in poor light, a habit that would eventually take a toll on his sight. His focus remained on the technical precision needed to replicate the masters. This period in Rome was marked by a quiet, repetitive labor. He lived a somewhat dissolute life while producing these faithful copies.

      Key Works and Historical Themes

Lepiani focused much of his energy on the moments that shaped Peru. He sought to capture the weight of history through scenes of conflict and national identity. In 1891, he produced La respuesta, a work that helped bring him the recognition needed to travel to Europe. His brush often returned to the War of the Pacific, documenting the heavy toll of those battles. This is seen in El último cartucho, painted between 1894 and 1899, which depicts a pivotal moment of resistance.

His interest in the past extended beyond recent wars to the very foundations of the nation. He spent time working on the Proclamación de la Independencia del Perú in 1904, a scene that has become a familiar image in Peruvian memory. He also looked further back to the era of the Spanish Conquest, as seen in his 1920 depiction of La captura de Atahualpa. These works show a man preoccupied with the specific, often violent, turning points of a country's timeline.

Other significant pieces from his career include:

      Later Years and Death

The years following his return to Peru in 1928 were marked by a physical decline. The years spent in Rome, focused on the meticulous task of copying Old Masters like Raphael and Titian to sustain himself, had taken a toll on his sight. The arduous work, often performed in poor light, left him almost blind. He had spent much of his life looking closely at the brushwork of others, and that intense focus eventually cost him his own vision.

Financial instability followed. The economic crash of 1929 stripped away his remaining resources, leaving him penniless. He returned to Europe, perhaps seeking the stability he once knew, but found only hardship. He died in Rome on November 28, 1932, at the age of 68. He was buried in the Campo Verano Monumental Communal Cemetery.

Where to See the Works Today

Tracing the physical presence of his canvases requires traveling between several institutions that hold his historical records. Much of his work remains in Peru, held within the Museo Nacional de Arte de la Pintura de la Guerra (MNAAHP). This collection includes several of his large-scale paintings, such as the scene of the Proclamation of the Independence of Peru and the depiction of the Los trece de la Isla del Gallo. His ink work, a study of the foundation of Lima, is kept in the Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI).

Other pieces have traveled beyond the borders of Lima. His painting El último cartucho is located in the Museo de los Combatientes del Morro de Arica. This work, which captures a moment from the Battle of Arica, remains a significant part of the visual history kept in that space. Visitors looking for his specific depictions of the War of the Pacific will find much of his output concentrated in these specialized museums.
