Early Life, Family and Training
Born in Paris, Jules Richomme entered a world where the precision of the line was a family tradition. As the only son of the engraver Théodore Richomme, his earliest lessons were shaped by the tools and techniques of his father’s trade. This foundational period provided him with a technical discipline that would later support his diverse pursuits as a painter, designer, and engraver.
His formal education eventually moved beyond the private instruction of his household. Seeking to refine his talent within the established academic traditions of France, he became a student of Michel Martin Drolling at the Beaux-Arts de Paris. This transition from familial apprenticeship to institutional study marked the beginning of a professional trajectory that would see him exhibiting regularly at the Salon for decades.
Artistic Career and Style
Richomme’s presence in the Parisian art scene was established early, with his first exhibition at the Salon appearing in 1833. He maintained a consistent presence at these exhibitions for decades, appearing regularly until the 1880s. His technical proficiency was recognized by the establishment through several medals, which he earned in 1840, 1842, 1861, and 1863.
A significant shift in his aesthetic approach occurred following an extended visit to Italy in 1847. Spending much of his time in Rome, he experienced a transformation in his painterly language. The influence of the Italian landscape and light encouraged him to adopt a style that was brighter and more lively than his earlier works. This evolution allowed him to move beyond the constraints of his initial training into a more spirited mode of expression.
His repertoire was diverse, encompassing portraits, landscapes, and various genre scenes. He demonstrated a particular facility for historical and religious subjects, often depicting significant figures such as Joan of Arc or Francis I of France. His ability to handle complex narratives was further evidenced by his work on several large-scale decorative projects and his skill as an engraver of biblical illustrations.

Religious and Public Commissions
The mid-century brought Richomme significant recognition, including an honorable mention at the 1855 Exposition Universelle. This period marked a transition toward large-scale decorative work, often involving sacred spaces. In 1855 and 1856, he collaborated with Camille Corot to decorate two chapels at the church of Saint-Nicolas-et-Saint-Marc in Ville-d'Avray. His hand was also present in the chapel of Saint Vincent de Paul at the church of Saint-Séverin in 1861, and later in the chapel of the Virgin at the church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité de Bercy in 1863.
Beyond the sanctuary, his commissions extended into the civic and secular spheres of French life. In 1868, he provided decorations for the Cour d'assises for the Seine. His ability to handle public spaces led to a prestigious appointment in 1879, when the French government selected him to decorate the Théâtre de Cherbourg. This work reflected a career that moved fluidly between the quietude of religious devotion and the formal requirements of state-sponsored architecture.
Personal Life and Family
The private life of Jules Richomme was deeply intertwined with the musical and theatrical circles of Paris. Around 1865, he married the lyric soprano Jenny Paupaille. This union brought a sense of familial complexity to his household, as he adopted Camille Dumény, the son from his wife's first marriage. Camille eventually found his own path in the public eye, becoming a well-known comic actor.
The artistic temperament of the family continued through the next generation. His daughter, Jeanne, followed the musical traditions of her mother as an opera singer. She later married the novelist André Beaunier. These domestic connections to the stage and literature reflected the social milieu in which Richomme moved throughout his long life.
Beyond his immediate household, Richomme maintained significant social ties within the French cultural landscape. He shared a lifelong friendship with the composer Charles Gounod. This relationship, characterized by a deep and enduring correspondence, provides a glimpse into the personal networks that supported his life in Paris.
