Early Life, Training and Artistic Beginnings

Laco Teren was born in Bratislava on June 11, 1960. His early years in the city placed him at the center of a shifting cultural landscape. Between 1979 and 1985, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. During these years of study, he focused on restoration, working under the guidance of doc. I. Meszárošová. This technical training provided a foundation in the physical properties and preservation of objects, a discipline that would run parallel to his later creative explorations.

By the mid-1980s, Laco Teren became a prominent figure within a specific generation of artists. This group emerged during a period of significant social and political change, seeking to move away from the weight of the existing regime. He was part of the postmodern generation that began to take shape around the middle of that decade. His presence in the Bratislava art scene was marked by a move toward new ways of seeing, as he and his contemporaries began to introduce Western postmodernist influences into the local landscape.

      Artistic Style and Creative Techniques

Laco Teren’s work emerged from a desire to move away from the weight of the socialist era. His early paintings often carried a sense of humor mixed with aggression, using the visual language of the regime to challenge it. He took the heavy, certain symbols of totalitarian propaganda—the sickle, the gear, the clenched fist, and the grain stalks—and reworked them on large canvases. Through a process of expressive, almost violent painting, he turned these rigid icons into something much more unstable and ironic. This approach aligned him with the postmodern movement of neo-expressionism, drawing influence from the Italian transavantgarde and the German Neue Wilde.

His practice is not limited to the flat surface of a canvas. He works with acrylics, drawing, and sculpture, often moving into the realm of the object. His hands move between the precision of restoration and the spontaneity of new painting. In his sculptural work, he explores the relationship between different materials, sometimes combining marble, glass, bronze, and iron to create physical presence. His creative life is multifaceted, extending into roles as an essayist, a gourmet, and even an occasional DJ, suggesting a life lived through various sensory and intellectual textures.

      Professional Roles and International Activity

His work has often moved beyond the studio and into the institutional sphere. Between 1990 and 1991, he spent time in Zurich on a scholarship stay at BINZ 39. This period of residency allowed for a different kind of focus away from his home base. Later, in 2004, he moved into teaching as a visiting professor at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague.

His involvement with the contemporary art scene in Bratislava was marked by a long-term commitment to the TRANZIT Foundation, where he worked from 2003 to 2013. This role placed him at the center of efforts to support contemporary art in the region. His reach also extended to international exhibitions, such as the 26th Biennial in São Paulo in 2004, where he participated with the project Traja z pekného páru.

Where to See His Works Today

His presence in the public sphere is felt through several institutional collections across Slovakia. You can find his paintings and objects within the Slovak National Gallery. His work also occupies space in the Považská galéria umenia in Žilina, where a significant portion of his output is held. The Museum of Arts Zilina also maintains pieces from his practice.

Other collections hold his work in different regions. The Oravská galéria v Dolnom Kubíne contains his pieces, as does the Ernest Zmeták Art Gallery in Nové Zámky. These locations house various stages of his development, from his earlier explorations to more recent developments in his painting and sculpture.
