A Life of Service and Shadow

Lewis Peckham lived a life defined by the rigid structures of military duty and the messy complexities of personal scandal. Born in Newport, Rhode Island, on 19 September 1788, he was the son of Thomas and Hannah Peckham. His early years were shaped by the disciplined atmosphere of the United States Infantry, where he rose through the ranks from an ensign in 1808 to a captain by 1814. This period of service placed him in significant locations, including Boston Harbor, where his hand was used not for canvas, but for the precise drafting of a manuscript map of Fort Independence in December 1809.

The stability of his military career stood in stark contrast to the turbulence of his private affairs. His marriage to Selinda ended in a public and bitter dissolution. In 1815, Selinda published a scathing advertisement in various journals, labeling him a monster and a villain, accusing him of deserting his domestic duties. Such a public condemnation suggests a man whose character was as much a subject of scrutiny as any portrait. He eventually found a second union with Mary Dague, but the shadows of his earlier reputation remained part of his history.

      The Artist Behind the Uniform

While his primary identity was that of a soldier in the Fourth Regiment, Peckham possessed a talent for capturing the self through oil on canvas. His Self-Portrait, held within the Indianapolis Museum of Art, offers a rare glimpse into the man behind the officer's commission. This work remains one of the few tangible records of his artistic hand, presenting a quiet moment of introspection that diverges from his more documented roles as a lieutenant and captain.

His death in Vincennes, Indiana, on 8 September 1822, brought an end to a life that moved between the precision of military cartography and the intimate medium of painting. He left behind a legacy that is less about an artistic movement and more about the intersection of a soldier's duty and a private, often difficult, human experience.
