      Early Life, Family and Training

Born in the sun-drenched city of Florence on 10 August 1850, Luise Max-Ehrler was the daughter of Theresia Aumüller and kk-lieutenant Franz Ehrler von Erlenburg. Her early years were shaped by a lineage of service and stability, yet the pull of the brush would soon lead her away from the quietude of her birthright. By 1866, she had arrived in Prague, a city that would serve as the first true crucible for her developing hand. It was there that she began her formal artistic education, seeking guidance under Emil Lauffer, who directed the Academy of Fine Arts.

The hunger for technical mastery drove her across borders, as she sought to refine her vision in the great centers of European art. She moved to Munich to pursue further studies under Joseph Flüggen, absorbing the disciplined methods of the German tradition. This period of intense study prepared her for the final, most influential chapter of her training in Vienna. In the Austrian capital, she entered the studio of the academic history painter Hans Makart, whose presence was felt in the very air of the city's artistic circles. Through these diverse teachers and cities, Luise Max-Ehrler transformed from a student of form into a painter of substance.

Life and Career in Munich and Vienna

In the city of Prague, Luise’s life took a significant turn on December 27, 1877, when she married the painter Heinrich Max. This union bound her closely to the artistic circles of the era. Following the passing of Hans Makart in 1884, the couple moved to Munich. It was in this German city that Luise continued to refine her craft, seeking further instruction under the watchful eye of her brother-in-law, Gabriel Max. This period of study allowed her to deepen her technical understanding through the guidance of a man intimately familiar with her own creative struggles.

The stability of her life in Munich was shattered in 1890 when she experienced the loss of her husband. This personal tragedy marked a turning point in her biography, leading her away from the familiar surroundings of her marriage and her mentor. After this bereavement, she eventually relocated to Aigen, near Salzburg, where she would remain for the rest of her days. Her path through the great art centers of Europe was shaped by these shifts in companionship and the mentorship of those within her own family circle.

      Notable Artworks and Subjects

The brush of Luise Max-Ehrler often turned toward the quiet intimacy of the human form and the domestic sphere. In her portraits, she sought to capture the essence of her subjects, as seen in the composition of Frauenporträt. She possessed a particular grace when depicting the bonds of family, a quality that emerges in her work Mutter mit Kind. Her interest in the traditional also led her to produce the Trachtenporträt, where the specific details of regional costume were given life upon the canvas.

Nature and the stillness of objects provided her with endless material for study. She found beauty in the arrangement of flora through her Blumenstillleben, and her ability to organize complex scenes was evident in the Monumental hunting still life. Even in more structured settings, such as the one depicted in Die Gartenlaube about 1896, her hand remained steady and purposeful. She moved between these varied subjects with a natural ease, shifting from the delicate petals of a flower to the heavy presence of a hunting scene.

Beyond these common themes, her imagination wandered into more symbolic or religious territories. She explored the sacred through Madonna unter Spitzbögen and touched upon more poignant, perhaps more melancholic, narratives in Le repos de l'Aiglon. Each work reveals a woman deeply engaged with the visual language of her time, finding meaning in both the everyday and the allegorical.
