      1814 - 1894

      Na prvi pogled

      A Life Rooted in Tradition

Born in 1814 in Hagi, within the Nagato Province, Mori Kansai entered a world shaped by the duties of the samurai. He was the son of Ishida Dennai, a man serving the Choshu-Han. While his early years were tied to this lineage, his path eventually led him away from the sword and toward the brush. His training began under Ohta Denryu, the official painter for the Choshul Clan, but a significant shift occurred in 1831 when he moved to Osaka. It was there that he encountered Mori Tetsuzan, a practitioner of the Maruyama school. This connection proved so profound that Kansai was eventually adopted by Tetsuzan, inheriting both a name and a specialized way of seeing the natural world.

His life was marked by the political shifts of his era. During the Bakumatsu period, he moved frequently between Kyoto and his home in Hagi, often acting as a messenger. He lived through the transition of the Meiji Restoration in 1868, a time when many found themselves navigating a changing social order. Kansai remained connected to the imperial cause, interacting with those loyal to the Emperor, and even contributed to the painting of the imperial palace in 1855.

      The Language of Nature

Kansai’s work is deeply tied to the Shijo style, a method that emphasizes the lifelike qualities of animals and plants. He had a particular talent for capturing the presence of creatures like monkeys, rabbits, and cats. His technique often involved using sumi ink and light colors on paper, sometimes incorporating gold leaf to add depth to his compositions. When looking at his depictions of birds, insects, or even a tanuki under an autumn moon, one finds a focus on the physical reality of these subjects.

His repertoire included a wide variety of natural themes:

      • Animals: Monkeys, rabbits, cats, deer, and various birds.
      • Flora and Fauna: Butterflies, shrimp, fish, and autumn grasses.
      • Landscapes and Settings: Winter landscapes, the Byōdō-in temple, and Kamigamo Shrine in summer.

In 1881, he produced a notable two-panel screen featuring rabbits, using ink, color, and gold leaf on paper. This work, along with others like his "Red Cliff," earned him recognition, including a silver medal at the first Domestic Paint Competition.

A Legacy of Teaching and Artistry

As he grew older, Kansai became a central figure in the Kyoto art community. Following the death of Shiokawa Bunrin, he helped lead the Jo’unsha group. His commitment to passing on these skills was evident in his roles as an educator. From 1880, he taught at the Kyoto-fu gagakukō and later led the Kyōto seinen kaiga kenkyū-kai in 1886. His status within the artistic hierarchy was solidified in 1890 when he was named a member of the Teishitsu gigei-in, the Imperial Court Art Academy.

By the time of his death in Kyoto in 1894, he had left behind a body of work held in significant collections, including the British Museum and the Yale University Art Gallery. His ability to blend the precision of the Maruyama school with the expressive spirit of the Shijo style allowed him to document the natural world with a clarity that remains legible to those who view his paintings today.
