A life shaped by Brussels
Omer Dierickx lived much of his life within the boundaries of Brussels and Uccle. Born in Brussels on April 2, 1862, he grew up in a house with ten siblings, the son of a porcelain manufacturer from Putte and a mother from Braine-le-Château. His brother, José Dierickx, also took up the brush. The early years were spent under the guidance of Jan Frans Portaels at the Academy of Brussels, where he studied between 1878 and 1884, returning briefly for further instruction in 1887 and 1888.
His hands were busy with more than just oil paint. He worked as a sculptor and a graphic artist, moving through the textures of clay and line. Later, his focus shifted toward teaching, serving as a professor at the Academy in Leuven and eventually leading the Drawing Academy St. Gilles in Brussels. He held the position of honorary director at the Academy of Fine Arts of Saint-Gilles from 1933 until his death in 1939.
The marks of a decorator
His work often moved beyond the edges of a portable canvas to meet the architecture of the city. He left traces on public buildings, contributing to the decoration of the Palais de la Bourse in Brussels, the Hôtel de Ville de Bruxelles, and the Arcades du Cinquantenaire. These large-scale efforts included wall paintings, ceiling decorations, and mosaics.
In his smaller works, one finds a focus on specific subjects:
- Portraits of individuals such as Jules Lagae, Édouard Van Even, and Ernest Solvay.
- Landscapes and figural scenes like A Summer harvest.
- Studio scenes, including The sculptor's studio from 1921.
- Decorative fragments for the Bourse de Bruxelles.
Groups and recognition
He was part of several circles that gathered around shared artistic interests in Belgium. In 1892, he helped found the group Pour l'art, which began with Symbolist leanings before moving toward a more eclectic approach. He also acted as a secretary for the Société nationale de L'Art monumental, a group established in 1920 to encourage large-scale decorative painting.
His efforts were noted in international settings, such as the World Exhibition in Amsterdam in 1889, where he received an award. He also participated in various salons in Ghent and Antwerp. His life was marked by official honors, including being named a Chevalier of the Order of Leopold and an Officier of the Order of the Crown.
