Early Life, Family and Training
Otakar Mrkvička was born in December 1898 in Příbram. He grew up in a household shaped by the visual and the performative, as his father, Otakar Mrkvička senior, worked as a photographer and was a dedicated enthusiast of the theater. This early environment provided a backdrop of light and staged emotion long before the artist began his own formal studies.
His technical path led him to Prague, where he sought out the discipline of the academy. He studied at the Malířská akademie under the guidance of professor J. Loukoty. This period of training was supplemented by his time at the Uměleckoprůmyslová škola, where he learned under professors E. Dítě and V. H. Brunera. These years in the classroom provided the foundation for a career that would eventually span painting, illustration, and graphic arts.
Artistic Movements and Professional Life
His professional life was deeply tied to the circles of the Czech avant-garde. He was a member and secretary of the Devětsil group, where he helped shape the movement's direction. His involvement extended to other important organizations, including Umělecká beseda and the Spolek českých umělců grafiků Hollar. These affiliations placed him at the center of the era's most active creative discussions.
The stage became another space for his handiwork. He worked as a scenographer and costume designer for both Osvobozené divadlo and Divadlo Dada. This work required a shift from the canvas to the physical space of the theater, translating visual ideas into the movement of performance. His reach also extended into the realm of publishing, where he spent much of his life illustrating books for various authors.
During the Second World War, his activities moved beyond the studio and into the shadows of resistance. He was a member of the Parsifal resistance group. After the war, he returned to his work as an illustrator and a journalist, continuing to produce graphic work for many decades.
Artistic Style and Key Works
His brushwork often moved between the structured clarity of purist-constructivism and the more fluid lines of lyrical constructive abstraction. There is a certain weight to his compositions, sometimes leaning into social realism or incorporating cubist elements to define form. In Zátiší s kytarou (Still Life with Guitar, about 1927), these tendencies meet, as the piece was conceived with a purist-constructivist spirit that organizes the objects into a precise, rhythmic arrangement.
The work often captures a quiet, singular moment. Polibek (The Kiss, 1933) and Tvář v ulici (Face in the Street) show a focus on human presence and the geometry of the surrounding space. He also spent much of his life translating words into images, providing illustrations for approximately seventy books. These graphic works accompanied the texts of various authors, including Honoré de Balzac and Karel Čapek.
