A life of iron and pigment
Before the brushes and the oils, there was the heavy work of a blacksmith. Born in Ixelles, Philibert Cockx spent his early years learning the trade of a farrier, a path set by his father. The heat of the forge and the weight of the hammer preceded the quiet study of light. It was only after five years of apprenticeship that he turned toward the Académie des beaux-arts de Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, studying under Félix Cogen. He later sought evening classes at the Académie de Bruxelles, finding a mentor in the realist painter Isidore Verheyden.
His hands, once accustomed to shaping metal, learned to manipulate different textures. He worked with oil on paper, wood, and canvas, often applying paint with a knife. His early years were spent as a house painter, a practical trade that likely informed his understanding of color and surface. He even prepared his own oils, grinding natural pigments to create the hues he required for his work.
Color and movement
The works of Cockx do not stay within a single boundary. In his younger years, he was part of the Brabançon Fauvism movement, working alongside figures like Auguste Oleffe in the free workshop known as l'Effort. During this period, his palette was bold, using saturated colors and thick layers of paint. He moved through various styles, from the bright intensity of Fauvism to a more personal expressionism that emerged after the First World War.
His subjects were as varied as his techniques. One might find him focused on:
- Portraits that capture a specific presence
- Landscapes, including a winter scene that once appeared at Christie's
- Still lifes featuring fruit and flora
- Animals and marine scenes
- Nudes and genre scenes
As time passed, the brightness of his early work began to settle. His palette darkened, moving away from the sharp contrasts of his youth toward a more somber, personal expression. He did not seek the approval of art markets or follow the strict theories of the day. He preferred his own freedom, often refusing to hold solo exhibitions.
A quiet legacy
Because he avoided the spotlight and the traditional exhibition circuit, much of his work remained in the shadows for a time. He lived through a period of great change, eventually passing away in Uccle in 1949. It was not until a retrospective at the Ixelles museum in 1964 that his contributions were revisited by a wider audience.
His recognition came in smaller, steady increments. In 1930, he was named an Officier de l'ordre de la couronne. Today, his traces remain in collections such as the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. His paintings, whether a simple study on paper or a larger work on canvas, carry the marks of a man who transitioned from the grit of the forge to the delicate precision of the engraver and painter.
