      Early Life, Family and Training

Robert Hliněnský entered the world on November 3, 1908, in Brno, Austria-Hungary. His origins were complicated; he was the illegitimate child of Berta Hliněnská and Robert Hrušák, a railway conductor from the Židenice district. This early reality shaped a life defined by the specific urban landscape of Brno. His formal education began within the German-speaking community of the city, attending the German General School from 1919 to 1920, followed by the German Boys' Middle School between 1920 and 1924.

His technical foundation was built through rigorous, specialized training. Between 1926 and 1928, Hliněnský completed a preparatory course at the Private Vocational School of Artistic Crafts in Brno. This was not merely a hobbyist's pursuit but a structured entry into the mechanics of visual production. He moved directly from this preparation into the School of Artistic Crafts in Brno, where he studied from 1928 to 1930. During these years, he was part of a special class dedicated to decorative painting, working under the instruction of professor Emanuel Hrbek. This period established the technical discipline that would define his later output as a painter, draftsman, and graphic artist.

      Professional Career and Artistic Organizations

Hliněnský’s professional trajectory was defined by a steady presence in the institutional art scene of Brno and Prague. Between 1932 and 1941, he worked within the painting workshop of the State Theatre in Brno, a period that anchored his technical practice before the disruptions of the war. His involvement in formal artistic circles was consistent and multifaceted. He was a member of the Spolek výtvarných umělců Aleš in Brno from 1940 to 1946, and during the same years, he was part of the Syndikát českých výtvarníků in Prague. These affiliations demonstrate a professional life deeply integrated into the organized structures of the Czech art community.

The post-war years saw him navigating the shifting landscape of Czechoslovak art through various collective memberships. He belonged to the Blok moravskoslezských výtvarníků from 1946 to 1948 and remained a member of the Svaz československých výtvarných umělců until 1970. His later career was marked by participation in specific groups that defined the mid-century aesthetic environment. He was active in Skupina M from 1959 to 1963 and later joined Skupina Parabola between 1963 and 1964. These memberships were not mere formalities; they placed his work within the specific debates and stylistic currents of the era.

      Teaching and Later Years

Hliněnský’s influence extended into the classroom during his final decade of professional activity. From 1960 until his retirement in 1970, he served as a teacher at the Art School in Brno. This period of pedagogy coincided with his continued involvement in various artistic groups, including Skupina M and Skupina Parabola. His commitment to the formal instruction of art in Brno remained a constant through these shifting organizational affiliations.

His personal life saw a significant milestone in 1962 when he married Eva Hliněnská, née Váchová. This union occurred during the latter part of his career, a time when his presence in the Brno art scene was firmly established through decades of exhibition and teaching. He remained a resident of Brno until his death on January 8, 1979, in Czechoslovakia. He was 70 years old at the time of his passing from a heart attack.

His final resting place is the Židenice Cemetery in Brno. He is located in group 16, specifically at grave 46–47. His life and work remain tied to the urban fabric of Brno, the city where he was born, taught, and eventually died.

      Exhibitions and Publications

Hliněnský maintained a consistent presence in the exhibition circuit for decades. His career saw 27 solo exhibitions spanning from 1935 through 1979, with a retrospective appearance in 2004. These individual shows were supplemented by 41 collective exhibitions, establishing a steady professional footprint. His output was documented through significant print material, including 9 solo catalogs and 33 collective catalogs. These publications provide the necessary framework for understanding the scale of his visual production.

The breadth of his exhibition history reflects a life deeply integrated into the regional art scene. His work appeared in various venues, including the Dům umění města Brna. One notable exhibition took place at the Dům umění in 1984, featuring both his paintings and drawings. His presence in the art world was not merely a series of events but a sustained engagement with both solo and group formats.

Where to See the Works Today

The physical presence of Robert Hliněnský's output is scattered across several significant Czech institutions. His works are held within the Moravian Gallery in Brno, a central location for his legacy. The Museum of the City of Brno and the National Library of the Czech Republic also maintain his pieces in their permanent collections. These holdings ensure his graphic and painterly contributions remain part of the regional record.

Beyond Brno, his art is distributed through various specialized galleries. The Gallery of Art Karlovy Vary and the Alšova jihočeská galerie in Hluboká nad Vltavou contain his works. You can also find his pieces in the collections of the Horácká galerie in Nové Město na Moravě and the Olomouc Art Museum. This wide distribution across different municipalities reflects the reach of his professional activity during his lifetime.
