      A Life Rooted in Nicolet

Rodolphe Duguay began his days on a farm in Nicolet, Quebec. In 1908, he left the family land to move toward Montreal, originally intending to study business. The pull of the brush was stronger than the ledger. By 1911, he was sitting in classrooms at the Council of Arts & Manufactures, learning from hands like Charles Gill and Joseph Saint-Charles. He spent time under William Brymner at the Art Association of Montreal, absorbing the quiet lessons of those who had come before him.

His path eventually led across the Atlantic. With a Quebec Government Grant in 1920, he moved to France. In Paris, he sat in the studios of the Académie Julian and the Académie Colarossi, studying under Jean Paul Laurens and Henri Morisset. He walked through Brittany, Normandy, and Italy, carrying his sketches through changing landscapes. These years abroad shaped how he saw light and shadow, particularly when he began working with woodcuts.

      The Weight of the Woodcut

While his paintings captured the quietude of the Quebec countryside, it was in the grain of wood that Duguay found a specific kind of strength. He developed a skill for engraving that relied on sharp contrasts and heavy lines. This interest deepened through his friendship with Paul-Albert Moras, a French printmaker. After returning to Canada in 1927, he faced periods where printmaking fell by the wayside, yet the medium returned to him through specific commissions.

In 1933, he worked on illustrations for Ulric-L. Gingras’s Du Soleil sur l'étang noir. This project brought a renewed focus to his woodcuts. He followed this in 1941 with work for Clément Marchand’s Courrier des villages. His prints often carried a heavy, emotional presence:

      • Midnight Fisherman (c. 1934)
      • The Portageur
      • Serenity (1936)
      • Why have you come, my Friend? (1936, 1942)

      Final Years and Recognition

Duguay’s work remained tied to the places that formed him. He created a large religious canvas for the church in Sorel and continued to paint the landscapes of Nicolet. His hands moved between the delicate demands of drawing and the physical labor of carving wood. In 1973, his contributions to Canadian art were recognized with the Order of Canada. He died that same year in Nicolet, leaving behind a body of work defined by the textures of the earth and the starkness of carved lines.
