Born in Szeged, Hungary, Sándor Nyilasy began his formal artistic training in 1891 at the drawing school in Budapest. His pursuit of mastery led him to the Munich Academy of Fine Arts starting in 1893, followed by studies at Simon Hollósy's private school in Munich between 1894 and 1895. Seeking further refinement, he studied at the Julian Academy in Paris in 1896, where he met János Thorma, who invited him to the Nagybánya artists' colony. Nyilasy spent the summers of 1897 and 1898 at this colony. After settling in Szeged in 1899, he continued to create works in Szeged, Horgos, and Táp in the years leading up to his death in 1934.
