The Life and Family of Thomas Falcon Marshall

Born in Liverpool during the month of December 1818, Thomas Falcon Marshall entered a world that would eventually see him establish himself as a painter of oils and watercolours. His early years were rooted in the bustling atmosphere of Liverpool, where he would spend much of his working life alongside the creative energy of Manchester. It was a life of steady movement, eventually leading him toward the streets of London around 1847, where he sought to further his standing among his peers. He remained in the capital until his passing in Kensington in 1878.

His private life was marked by a large and bustling household. He was married to Amelia Jane Davies, and together they raised fifteen children. This expansive family ensured that his influence and presence were felt deeply within his domestic sphere. The talent for expression seemed to run through his lineage, though it often manifested in different ways for his descendants. His son, William Elstob Marshall, followed a path of visual art, focusing his particular attention on the depiction of animals and pets.

The family's reach extended into the dramatic arts through his other son, Percy Falcon Marshall, who found his calling as an actor. This legacy of performance continued into the next generation, reaching even further into the public eye through his grandson, the Hollywood actor Herbert Marshall. Through these varied paths, the name of Thomas Falcon Marshall remained woven into the fabric of both the fine arts and the stage.

      Artistic Career and Major Exhibitions

The early years of his career were rooted in the industrious spirit of the North, where he began to make his mark through both oils and watercolours. In 1836, he presented four pictures to the Liverpool Academy Exhibition, a moment that signaled his growing presence in the regional art circles. His ambition soon led him toward the prestigious halls of the capital, making his debut at the Royal Academy in 1839. It was during this formative period that his skill in capturing the human form was formally recognized; in 1840, he was awarded a silver medal by the Society of Arts for an oil-painting of a figure subject.

As his reputation expanded, his presence in the great exhibition rooms of London became a constant. He was a frequent contributor to the British Institution, where he exhibited 40 paintings, and he brought 42 works to the Suffolk Street Gallery. His reach extended across the country, as he was well represented at exhibitions in both Liverpool and Manchester. Throughout his life, he maintained a prolific output, ultimately presenting 60 works to the Royal Academy.

      Notable Works and Subjects

The brush of Marshall moved with a versatile hand, finding purpose in the quietude of landscapes and the formal dignity of portraits. He also turned his attention to history paintings, seeking to capture the weight of significant human moments. In 1841, he produced LANDING THE CATCH, an oil on canvas that measures 56 x 46cms. This work reflects a keen interest in the daily labors and scenes of life that defined his era.

His talent for narrative was perhaps most evident in his more dramatic compositions. He gained recognition for works such as Emigration – The Parting Day and Sad News from the Seat of War, pieces that spoke to the heavy emotions of a changing society. Such themes of movement and loss were central to his expressive range. Even his more intimate subjects held a place in the public eye, as seen in Christmas Morning (1865), which captured a sense of seasonal stillness.

One of his most significant achievements was The Coming Footstep (1847), a work that found a permanent home within the national collection in South Kensington. Through these varied subjects, from the sweeping vistas of the natural world to the specific, poignant struggles of people, Marshall sought to translate the complexities of the human condition onto the canvas.
