The Hand and the Sign
The work begins with the discipline of a sign painter. Between 1957 and 1962, Tonny Hørning trained under Magnus Nielsen in Silkeborg, a period spent mastering the controlled application of pigment. This technical foundation informs the way color sits on a surface. Though he later moved into the realm of the autodidact, the precision of those early years remains visible in the way he handles a brush. He made his debut in 1969 at Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling, stepping away from the commercial clarity of signage toward a more personal, abstract language.
In 1976, he became a co-founder of the artist group Ny Abstraktion, a collective that shaped much of the visual discourse between 1976 and 1988. This period marked a shift in his trajectory, moving from the literalism of signs to the complexities of abstraction. His presence in the Danish art scene was solidified through exhibitions at Charlottenborgs Forårsudstilling and various galleries, including Galleri Gl. Lejre.
Space and Ritual
His practice extends beyond the flat surface of a canvas into the physical presence of installations. In 1999, he produced Ritual II, an installation that moves the viewer into a specific, curated environment. This interest in how art occupies a room is a recurring theme. His work is not confined to a single medium; it shifts between the two-dimensional plane of a painting, such as his 1994 work Uden titel, and the three-dimensional arrangement of space.
The reach of his work is felt in public and institutional spaces across Denmark. His pieces have found permanent homes in several collections, including:
- Statens Museum for Kunst
- Arken
- Århus Kunstmuseum
- Nordjyllands Kunstmuseum
- Odense Kunstmuseum
- Randers Kunstmuseum
- Køge Skitsamling
- Ny Carlsbergfondet
- Den kongelige Kobberstiksamling
- Herning Kunstmuseum
- Esbjerg Kunstmuseum
- Kastrupgårdsamlingen
- Himmerlands Kunstmuseum
- Storstrøms Kunstmuseum
- Statens Kunstfond
Public Presence
There is a practical, architectural dimension to his output. His work has been integrated into the fabric of daily life through various commissions and decorations. These are not merely objects to be viewed in a gallery, but elements of the built environment. His installations and decorations can be found in locations such as:
- TEKO-Center Herning
- Københavns Universitet
- Handelshøjskolen i Århus
- Pharmacia in Wien
- Sampension, København
From the quiet study of a sign painter to the expansive scale of university decorations, his career reflects a steady, persistent engagement with the material world. He remains a figure whose work is woven into the institutional and public landscape of Denmark.
