The Weight of Form and Shadow

Ubaldo Oppi was born in Bologna, Italy, but his early years were shaped by the movement of his family toward Vicenza. His path was not a straight line through the academies; instead, it was a series of shifts between borders. He spent time in Vienna between 1907 and 1909, where he studied under Gustav Klimt. This period in Vienna left a mark on his eye, even as he later moved through the artistic circles of Paris. In those Parisian streets, he crossed paths with Fernande Olivier, a woman who had been the mistress of Pablo Picasso. His life was marked by the heavy realities of the era, including service in the military along the Adriatic coasts and later as a soldier in the alpine regiments during the first Great War. He was even held as a prisoner of war at Mauthausen by the Austrians.

His brushwork eventually settled into a neo-quattrocento realist style. He looked back to the foundations of Italian art, finding a specific language in the works of Sandro Botticelli, Piero della Francesca, and Rosso Fiorentino. His figures often possess a certain mass, a physical presence that feels grounded. In his later years, his focus shifted toward the spiritual, leading him to create altarpieces and frescoes. He decorated the Chapel of San Francesco in the Basilica of St Anthony in Padua between 1926 and 1928, and later worked for the church of Bolzano Vicentino in 1932.

      The Movement of the Novecento

In 1922, Oppi became a founding member of the Novecento Italiano in Milan. He worked alongside figures like Anselmo Bucci, Leonardo Dudreville, Achille Funi, Emilio Malerba, Piero Marussig, and Mario Sironi. This group sought a return to order and tradition, a departure from the fractured experiments of the previous decades. However, his connection to the group was not permanent. By the 1926 Venice Biennale, he was no longer exhibiting with them. His work remained a study in volume and light, often capturing a sense of stillness or a quiet, heavy atmosphere.

His technical approach often emphasized the physical reality of his subjects. Some of his paintings from the early 1920s show a preoccupation with the strength of rural life, focusing on the robust forms of peasants and the weight of their bodies. These works often carry a certain tension, a sense of life held in a quiet, suspended moment. His later work as a lieutenant colonel of the Alpine troops during the second Great War marked the final chapter of a life defined by both the quietude of the canvas and the movement of history.
