A Life in Oil and Shadow

Born in 1859 in Stouffville, Ontario, William Stuart Taggart entered a world shaped by the steady influence of his father, Rev. Charles Taggart, a prominent Methodist minister. His early years were marked by a quiet, developing talent for the brush, a skill that would eventually lead him away from the pulpit and toward the easel. After receiving a standard education in public and high schools, he sought formal direction under the instruction of Windeat, a noted English artist. This early training provided the technical foundation for a career defined by the precision of portraiture and the nuances of oil on canvas.

By the time he relocated to Ottawa in the fall of 1894, Taggart had established himself as a significant presence in the Canadian art scene. His work often captured the likenesses of the era's most influential figures, translating their public stature into private, painted moments. He married Annie Belle Adams in 1882, a union that occurred as his professional reputation began to solidify within the province.

      The Faces of a Nation

Taggart’s portfolio reflects a man deeply engaged with the social and political fabric of his time. He possessed a particular ability to render the character of his subjects, moving between formal commissions and more intimate, narrative scenes. His technical focus remained largely on the medium of oil, utilizing the texture of the paint to define the contours of his subjects' lives.

      His notable works include:

      • The 1883 portrait of James A. Garfield, which gained attention in the United States.
      • A 1891 depiction of Sir John A. Macdonald.
      • The 1895 portrait of Sir John Thompson.
      • The 1904 painting titled Forgotten, currently held by the National Gallery of Canada.
      • The 1889 work Caught in the Act, inspired by a conversation among his own children.

      The Quiet Observer

While his portraits of statesmen like Sir John A. Macdonald and Hon. C. F. Fraser secured his place in historical record, Taggart also found expression in more contemplative subjects. His 1904 work, Forgotten, demonstrates a departure from the rigid requirements of official portraiture, offering instead a study in mood and composition. This ability to pivot from the public face of leadership to the more subtle, perhaps melancholic, aspects of human existence defined his professional range.

He passed away in Ottawa in 1925, leaving behind a body of work that remains a part of the national collection. His life was one of steady, disciplined observation, moving from the religious environment of his youth to the secular, visual documentation of a developing Canada.
