After inheriting a sum of money, John Cranch leaves the life of a clerk behind. He moves to London with the intent of securing a place among the professional painters of the era. He focuses his efforts on portraits and historical pictures, seeking recognition within the established art circles. While he fails to secure a position on the walls of the Royal Academy, his presence is felt elsewhere. He exhibits at the Society of Artists, contributing the work Burning of the Albion Mills to their collections.
The momentum of his career continues through the early nineteenth century. In 1808, John Cranch contributes eight pictures to the British Institution, marking a significant period of professional activity. His work moves through the galleries of the capital, establishing his reputation as a painter of historical scenes and genre subjects. He navigates the competitive landscape of the London art scene, finding more success in these alternative institutions than in the Academy.
The final chapter of his life finds him in Bath. He resides there for many years, maintaining his practice in the city until his death in February 1821. His time in Bath follows a long period of engagement with the London art world, marking the conclusion of a career spent transitioning from a self-taught boy to a recognized painter of historical and portrait subjects.
Cranch possesses a singular niche in the history of decorative arts through his skill with "poker-pictures." This technique involves using a hot poker to burn intricate designs directly into wood or other materials. The heat leaves a permanent, scorched mark that defines the imagery. While his portraiture and historical scenes occupied the galleries of the Society of Artists and the British Institution, these heated compositions offered a distinct, tactile alternative to traditional brushwork.
His most significant achievement remains The Death of Chatterton. This work achieved a level of recognition that his other historical and portrait pieces often lacked. In contrast to these dramatic scenes, his genre paintings often focus on the quietude of rural life. Playing with Baby, painted about 1795, captures a domestic moment and remains part of the collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Other compositions, such as Cottage at Night and Kitchen Interior, continue this focus on everyday settings and the interplay of light within simple, rustic environments.
