The Roots of a Scholar's Vision

Born in Pujiang, Zhejiang, Chen Xiaofeng began his life as Chen Wuyong. His early years were shaped by the quiet influence of local masters. As a child, he spent his time studying the works of Ren Bonian, Wu Changshuo, Zhang Shuqi, Wu Fuzhi, and Zheng Zuwei. These early encounters with traditional painting provided the foundation for a life dedicated to the brush and the ink stone. His path eventually led him to Hangzhou, where he studied under Professor Wu Shanming, before continuing his academic pursuits at Nankai University.

His development was marked by a deep commitment to the community of artists. In 1988, he helped found the Youth Art Society, and by the following year, he was serving as the president of the Hushu Society in Hangzhou. These roles were not merely titles but reflections of a man deeply embedded in the creative life of his region. By 1995, he became one of the founders of the Dazhen National Institute, a group that earned the distinction of being called the "Three Masters of Qiantang."

      A Synthesis of Traditions

Chen Xiaofeng’s work is defined by a specific technical balance. He is a practitioner of the new Zhe School, a style that seeks to find harmony between different historical approaches. His paintings often bridge the gap between the Southern and Northern schools of Chinese art. This synthesis is visible in his varied subject matter, which includes:

      • Figure paintings that capture human presence and character.
      • Landscape paintings that explore the natural world.
      • Calligraphy that reflects his scholarly training.

His ability to blend these styles allowed him to move fluidly between different modes of expression. Whether working on a landscape or a figure, the influence of his diverse teachers remained present in every stroke.

      Leadership and Legacy

As his career progressed, Chen moved into roles of significant academic influence. In 2002, he was elected President of the Wulin Academy of Arts. His expertise was sought beyond the academy, leading him to serve as a visiting professor at the Nanchang Institute of Technology. This period of his life saw him transitioning from a student of tradition to a guardian and teacher of it.

Today, he is recognized as a painter, calligrapher, and scholar. His life's work remains a bridge between the classical methods of the past and the evolving perspectives of the new Zhe School. Through his teaching and his art, he has helped maintain the continuity of these long-standing Chinese traditions.
