A Life in Munich
Otmar Lederer was a German painter, graphic artist, and photographer born in Munich, Germany. His artistic journey began during the Second World War when he started his studies at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts under Adolf Schinnerer. Following the heavy air raid on Munich in October 1943, the sixteen-year-old artist captured the scene of the glowing city, depicting the dust-covered square in front of the Starnberg station and the smoke-shrouded silhouette of the Palace of Justice, where people appeared as fleeting, wandering shadows.
After being drafted into military service in February 1944 and later becoming a prisoner of war, Lederer returned to Munich to continue his studies with Karl Caspar and Ernst Geitlinger. He was married to his first wife, Gudrun Bächler, with whom he had a daughter, Sabine Chandel, who is also an artist and graphic artist. Later in life, he shared an atelier in Munich's Geibelstraße with Sabine Kretzschmar.
