The Life and Artistic Practice of William Jelley
William Jelley, also known as Guillaume Émile Victor Jelley, was a Belgian painter, architect, sculptor, and poet born in the Brussels metropolitan area. He received his formal training as a painter at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels between 1883 and 1885. As a painter, his work focused on landscapes and still lifes, executed in either oil or watercolor. His artistic presence was felt in various Brussels circles, including the creation of the group Pour l'art and active participation in circles such as L'Effort, Les Indépendants, and L'Atelier Libre Labor. He also participated in the Tuesday salons organized by Ray Nyst and Élise Soyer.
Architectural and Artistic Contributions
Beyond the canvas, Jelley was a significant architect of the Art Nouveau and eclectic styles in Brussels. His architectural legacy includes several notable works, such as the Art Nouveau villas on Avenue des Taillis, which feature distinctive woodwork and sgraffito. His eclectic villas on Avenue des Gerfauts were inspired by the English cottage style. His professional life was intertwined with his family; he used the name of his grandfather, a British carpenter, for his architectural plans. He was married to Adrienne Bruyère, an author and still-life painter.
