A Life Between Brushes and Light

Born in Whitehaven, England, in 1798, William Valentine arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1818 with the tools of his trade. His early years in Canada were marked by a variety of labors that kept him close to the physical world. He worked as a glazier, a house painter, and even a sign painter, often finding himself part of a partnership with his cousin James Bell to manage a firm specializing in ornamental painting and glass. These practical roles provided a foundation for his later artistic pursuits.

His personal life in Halifax was anchored by two marriages, first to Susannah Elizabeth Smith in 1822, with whom he had two daughters, and later to Sarah Ann Sellon in 1830. While his professional life saw him traveling through Charlottetown, Saint John, and St. John's, his heart and home remained deeply tied to the Atlantic coast.

      The Evolution of a Portraitist

In the early years of his career, Valentine worked as a teacher of drawing and a painter of landscapes. He eventually found his true calling in portraiture, filling a gap left by earlier artists in the region. His style was naturalistic and plain, often presenting sitters in black clothing against dark, somber backgrounds. This approach focused on the quiet reality of the person before him rather than unnecessary flourish.

A significant shift occurred after 1836, when he traveled back to England to study the works of established painters like Sir Thomas Lawrence. Upon his return to Halifax around 1837, his ability to handle tone and color showed marked improvement. He became a preferred choice for the local merchants and professionals, capturing the likenesses of many notable Nova Scotians, including:

      A Pioneer of the Daguerreotype

In 1839, Valentine traveled to Paris, where he encountered the newly public Daguerreotype process. This encounter changed his career path as much as it changed the medium of portraiture. He returned to North America with a new set of skills and specialized equipment acquired from Boston, becoming a pioneer of photography in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and likely Newfoundland.

By 1842, he was advertising his ability to execute Daguerreotype likenesses in Halifax. His studio, which operated at 4 Marchington Lane, became the first permanent photographic studio in British North America. He worked with the delicate chemistry of polishing copper and fuming with mercury to produce accurate, sharp images that met the demands of a changing era.

Tragedy struck his studio in 1848 when a fire destroyed much of his work and damaged his photographic apparatus. This loss was a heavy blow that many believe contributed to his declining health. William Valentine died on December 26, 1849, and was laid to rest in the Camp Hill Cemetery in Halifax.
